Roofs in The Junction: what we actually see
The Junction sits between Merewether Beach and Cooks Hill, with Glebe Road shops at its heart. The housing is mostly Federation and inter-war homes on the flat, with townhouse developments and a few apartment blocks closer to the shops. It's far enough from the surf to escape the worst of the salt, but near enough that we still check.
We see a lot of terracotta tile roofs here from the 1920s and 30s, now with failed valleys and fretted ridge pointing, as well as older iron roofs that are on their third round of patch repairs. Townhouse complexes bring strata re-roofs too.
Typical housing: Federation and inter-war homes, plus newer townhouses
- Older cottages with original iron or terracotta roofs
- Townhouse complexes needing strata-approved re-roofs
- Salt exposure is lower than beachfront Merewether, but we still check your distance from the surf
Measure before you choose the steel
Many Junction homes sit 400 metres or more from breaking surf, where standard COLORBOND® is the right product. Streets on the Merewether side can be closer. We measure from your address, and if it's borderline we'll show you the cost difference for Ultra so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.

Surf exposure
Lysaght's guidance puts COLORBOND® Ultra at roughly 100–200 m from breaking surf and standard COLORBOND® further back. We measure from your address.

The Junction roofing questions
Our strata complex has several roofs. Can you do them in stages?
Yes. We often re-roof townhouse complexes one building at a time, with a schedule the committee can share with residents and a single warranty covering the lot.
How much does a new roof cost in The Junction?
Newcastle-wide rates for a COLORBOND® re-roof are about $76–$170 per m² (Sep 2026). A full single-storey replacement typically costs $9,500–$23,750. In The Junction, coastal-grade steel, tile or asbestos removal and access all affect where your roof lands. We give a fixed, itemised quote after a free inspection.
Do I need COLORBOND® Ultra in The Junction?
Possibly. Lysaght recommends COLORBOND® Ultra roughly 100–200 m from breaking surf or within 100 m of calm marine water such as the harbour. Many The Junction homes are further back and suit standard COLORBOND®. We check your exact location before specifying, because the wrong grade can void the material warranty.
Do I need council approval to replace my roof in The Junction?
Replacing roof cladding on a one- or two-storey house is often exempt development in NSW, provided the home isn't a heritage item or in a heritage conservation area. Other exclusions apply, so we confirm this for your property before work starts.
