The case for COLORBOND®
Light
Steel sheeting weighs a small fraction of concrete or terracotta tiles. That means less load on an old frame.
Weather-tight
Long sheets with few joins. Fixed to the manufacturer's spec, the roof won't shed tiles in an east coast low.
Low maintenance
No pointing to crack, no tiles to slip. Rain washes most of the dirt off; wash down sheltered areas that rain doesn't reach.
Cooler options
Lighter colours reflect more heat. Add an insulation blanket underneath and the roof space stays cooler.
Rainwater friendly
Smooth sheet and good gutters suit rainwater tanks on acreage in Black Hill, Lenaghan and Minmi.
Looks right
Corrugated suits cottages and terraces. Square-rib and concealed-fix suit modern homes.
The coastal catch
Salt is the one thing that shortens a steel roof's life in Newcastle. BlueScope's Lysaght guidance puts standard COLORBOND® steel at roughly 200–400 m or more from breaking surf. Closer in, you need COLORBOND® Ultra, and for the most severe sites, stainless or aluminium. If you're near the beach or harbour, read our coastal steel guide before you choose.
Picking a colour
Lighter colours like Surfmist, Shale Grey and Dune keep homes cooler. Darker colours like Monument and Night Sky give a bold modern look, but they absorb more heat. Heritage areas may have colour guidelines. Try colours on a house with our roof colour visualiser.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a COLORBOND® roof last?
Installed properly and matched to its environment, a COLORBOND® roof can last for decades. The manufacturer's warranty term depends on your distance from the coast and industry, which is why we check your site before choosing the steel grade.
